Sharon Parnell

Clinical Psychologist

My Story

I’ve been working as a clinical psychologist since 2002, in settings including private practice, community child health and hospitals. I see people throughout the lifespan, and I work from an evidence based approach. Usually, I’ll spend 3 – 4 sessions in trying to assess and understand a person before I can make confident recommendations about the kind of therapy that I think would be most likely to help. My understanding is informed by training in relationships and attachment; information processing and mentalization. What this means in practice is that I’ll work with you and / or your child to think about the approaches that might help you. Sometimes that might mean that I’ll recommend therapy but may recommend other approaches, depending on what we believe the important factors are that are affecting you or your child.

If we decide that therapy is the best plan, I’ll think with you all about what kind of therapy, and what we would need to do.  My skills include mentalization based treatments, attachment based interventions including Circle of Security, EMDR, Psychotherapeutic approaches, CBT, and interpersonal therapies.   I’m currently undertaking additional training in psychodynamic psychotherapy and Mentalization based treatment approaches. My aim is to provide a developmentally focused service to you or your child, in the hopes that we can foster growth together.

I’d be delighted to have a brief phone conversation with you to think about whether meeting me would be a good first step for you or your child.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out to the lifespan team.
